Kurtz Center for the Performing Arts

Kurtz Center for the Performing Arts
William Penn Charter School, Philadelphia PA
Acoustics, Sound and Video Systems

Project Description

The new 30,000 sf building houses a 639-seat theater, band room, choir room, music computer lab, individual practice rooms, restrooms, dressing rooms, faculty offices, library, recording studio, scene shop, costume room, and dressing rooms. At the rear, a theater crossover is enclosed with a wraparound porch that doubles as an outdoor stage, which relates to the traditionally styled porch on the main elevation. The stage lighting system can be operated from an iPhone. Multiple levels of control are provided for every user and for every function from cleaning, to lectures, to complex performances. In this facility, the video projector is located in the control room and, because the control room is secure, the control room encloses the projector noise so the noise is not heard in the auditorium.

With 50 LEED points, the Kurtz Center received Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council.
